Obituary of Mildred Jones

Jones, Mildred Mae (Hawkes) Mildred Mae (nee Hawkes) died peacefully on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at the Hospice of Greater Saint John. Mildred was born on October 19, 1927 in Maxwell, NB and grew up in Woodstock. Daughter of the late Sanford James Hawkes and Bernice Pecola (Hall) Hawkes, she graduated from Woodstock High School in 1945 and Acadia University in Wolfville Nova Scotia in 1949. Mildred worked as a social worker for the Children's Aid Society in Antigonish before returning to Woodstock. There she married the late Mr. Justice J. Turney Jones in 1955. The two had three children before moving to Saint John in 1966. An accomplished athlete, Mildred was inducted into the Acadia Sports Hall of Fame (basketball) and won two New Brunswick Senior Women's curling championships (1980 and 1981) as skip. She was also an American Contract Bridge League Life Master and a former ladies president of the Westfield Golf and Country Club. She served on several community boards and was a founding member of the West Saint John Food Bank. Mildred was predeceased by her husband, Turney, in 1994; brothers Allison, Gerald, Joseph, Wesley and Charles and sister Annie. She is survived by her children Lynn Gow (John) of Saskatoon, Gary Jones (Ana) of Rocklin, California, and Robert Jones (Marianne Beckwith) of Saint John; granddaughters Ingrid, Maria, Hannah, Joanna, Katie, Kathy, Ashley, Yvette and Meghan and grandsons Jackson, Daniel and James. She is missed by many other relatives and friends especially her dearest friend and golf, curling and bridge partner of 45 years, Mary Cox of Saint John. Resting at Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John (634-1701), with visiting on Thursday, July 28, 2011 from 3:00 to 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be held from Castle Funeral Home on Friday, July 29, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery at a later date.
