To Beth. I was so sorry to see that your dad had passed. I thought he was such a great guy.
I delivered his mail on Clifton St for many years and we used to talk often.
At Westfield we golfed together several times. One year we were on the winning scramble team and your dad was the hero for making two long putts

My deepest sympathy to Fred’s family. I first met Fred 3 years ago when my father moved into Parkland Saint John. I had been a Pharmacy classmate of Janice, and her daughter is a good friend of my niece, so it was wonderful to make the connection with him. I looked forward to seeing him each time I visited Dad. He was a lovely, friendly gentleman who helped make Dad feel welcome and they subsequently shared many meals together. He will be greatly missed at Carleton Hall.

Dear John, Beth, Ann Marie & Tommy (and families) it is with sadness that I read about your Dad's passing this morning. We have such fond memories of your Dad (always known as Uncle Fred & Aunt Anita) although we weren't related. During our younger years we shared summer camping or holidays on "the Island'. And Christmas dinners with Grammy Bella were always a treat meeting up with your tribe and ours. Lots of stories and much laughter. Fred was a true gentleman and so loyal to your mom and taking such great care with her. Over the years we lost touch but your Dad (&Mom) will forever hold a special place in our hearts and memories. My deepest condolences to you all and your families. Love Colleen (Dunphy) & John Holliday

Margaret, John and Whelan family:
For many years I listened to my mom and her sisters, the Fawcett girls from East SJ, talk about Fred Whelan who owned Wassons Pharmacy. They had all worked for Fred while they were teenagers . They had nothing but lovely things to say about what a kind man he was. Of course Wassons was such a staple pharmacy in the city. Everyone knew about it and that's where we went whenever we needed a pharmacy. Then fast forward to the 80's and Margaret became our MD. My mom found out she was married to John and then we heard stories about when she use to babysit him when he was young. Fast forward again and our daughter became a pharmacy student at Dal and had Fred's daughter as her professor. Just like her dad, the students at Dal found her to be every bit as kind and compassionate as he was.
Our family has a long history surrounding this wonderful man and his family. His legacy of kindness lives on through all of you. Our family would like to send along our condolences to you. We know Fred will be greatly missed. Please know we keep you in our hearts

Colin MacDonald; to the Whalen family I share my condolences. When I was a young boy in Charlottetown, I was invited to stay with the Whalen Family on Clifton st. It was my first trip off PEI and I recall how nicely I was treated by Aunt Anita and Uncle Fred. I re called walking up to Martello Tower and had never been at such a site. One day Uncle Fred took me golfing for my first ever golf game; I believe it may have been in Hampton or Sussex. Like many young boys, the first golf outing was special.. as was the big ice cream on the way home. My other memory was playing "on the mountains" behind your home.
I know the family is blessed with many great memories. Regards. Colin

My sincere condolences to all of my Whelan cousins. Fred was a gentle man and a true gentleman. I was a bit of an outlier in the McCabe crew in that my mom passed away in 1955 when I was not quite 6 years old and did not experience all of the family events of others. Despite that any time I met Anita and Fred at things like the McCabe family picnic Fred always went out of his way to include me and talk about mutual interests such as golf. He lived a great life and was the type of man we all should aspire to be.

From Reg, Marge,´´Robbie¨ MacLellan and Family.

Due to the marriage of our Guardians,
Marie MacLellan married John Callaghan in the fall of 1939.
Fred and I didn’t get along very well at first,
But after a few boyish talks,
A punch in the nose
Which I deserved,
We got along well.
Being older by four years,
Fred included me in his social life.
He was good in sports.
I called him “Freddie Joe.”
In later years,
We both married in 1953
And had families of five.
Though you have passed on,
I feel
I will always

To all who loved this gem of a man, Ellen and I send our sympathy. Fred was one of my heroes who transcended generations. As a boy, he treated me with kindness and respect. This carried on and our friendship strengthened as we aged. Twenty one years difference in our ages meant nothing. When visiting Westfield or hosting in Sussex we worked it out to golf together. What a treat to have fulfilling conversations and fun golfing EVERY time. Whenever we met, his genuine interest in me and my families warmed my heart and renewed my resolve to be as good a man as he. RIP Fred!
