Malcolm was the "cool dad" . Penny and Malcolm adopted the philosophy early on that it was better to keep her son close to home and safe so they opened up their home to us foolish teenagers. Malcolm always spoke to me like an adult even when we were acting like kids. I thoroughly enjoyed the time at Fitz' place and wished I could have spent more time with him as an adult. Rest Peacefully Mac!

To the family of Malcolm Fitzgerald: Please accept my sincere condolence. I knew both Malcolm and Penny from early years in both our careers with the RCN, and other shore establishments. Our paths crossed numerous times including employment at Saint John Shipbuilding Ltd. Always a great individual who was pleasant to talk with and exchange work information. Malcolm has "crossed the bar" and has met his maker, he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. R.I.P. Malcolm. Ronald J. Yaschuk - Quispamsis, N.B.

Dear Penny and family, we are so sad to hear the news that Fitz has passed away. An exceptional man and friend and it is a privilege to have known him. We will never forget how good he was to our Dad. He and my Dad can now carry on together once again. I can almost hear them now, the Navy man and the Airforce man ribbing each other endlessly but one could not miss the genuine affection and respect between them. May your memories serve to comfort you through this difficult time.

Penny, living on the west coast did not allow me the time I would have loved to spend with you and Fitz but I cherish the times we did have and the occasional phone conversations. I knew the first time I met Fitz that you had brought an incredible man into our family and I will ever be grateful for that. Love to you, Michael, Brian and David

So sad to hear about the passing of “Fitz”. Gina and I send our deepest condolences to Penny and family. Fitz was a great mentor to me and other young people during our days at Saint John Shipbuilding and he followed our progress all through our careers. He was always caring and wanted to know how everyone was doing. Fitz looked after the people in his life. He has been one of those rare special people you meet in life and impacted all who met or knew him. He has lived life well and we are all better for it.

Fitzy and I were shipmates, friends, and many years ago we were jogging partners. We ran both the Vancouver Seawall and the Seattle marathon - we ran as partners and crossed the finish lines in step. He was a big part of our life, and created so many life long memories. A fine shipmate, a true gentleman and incredibly loyal friend. George

Dear Penny and family. I was terribly saddened to read the news of Fitz's passing. Please accept my most sincere condolences at what must be a very difficult time. I clearly remember first meeting Fitz some 40 years ago when he was the CSE in HMCS Restigouche, and I was a sub-lieutenant watch keeping officer. He was one of the most exceptional men I ever served with: professional to a fault, a wonderful friend and shipmate and an inspirational leader. I learned a lot from Fitz back then, and over the subsequent years. Like many, many others, I will miss him and remember him always.

So very sorry to hear the sad, sad news of Malcolm's passing. I had the distinct pleasure of serving under Malcolm in HMCS Terra Nova as I was just starting my career in the Royal Canadian Navy. Malcolm was my POTEL in the radio room on Terra Nova which was my first ship. My memories of Malcolm are ones of his being a gentleman, warm-hearted, firm and fair, yet also understanding of the needs of his men of whom he was in charge. The most important thing that I remember was his warm smile and positive attitude. He always made everyone felt at ease. I extend my sincere thoughts and prayers to Penny and the entire Fitzgerald family at this sad time. Ralph and Colleen Marin

What can we say about Malcolm that people already know as soon as you met him. He was a kind and generous man to a fault to everyone. He looked after my Dad taking time out of his day to visit and check up on him while he was their neighbor When Vicky and I became neighbors to Malcolm and Penny a friendship automatically blossomed, with lots of wonderful memories. Love and Prayers to Penny and family .
