Obituary of Mary Gertrude Richards
A life well lived- Mary Gertrude Richards passed away peacefully at Bobby’s Hospice, on Thursday, February 13th, 2020 at the age of 101. Mary was born on October 5, 1918 to the late Edward Joseph and Gertrude (Bernard) Richards in Saint John, NB. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mary was a graduate of St. Vincent’s School and went on to become a nurse, attending St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing. Mary spent her nursing career at the D.V.A (Department of Veteran Affairs) Hospital. She was a long-time member of the Holy Spirit Parish (St. Rose of Lima), the I.C.C.A, and Cathedral Choir. Mary also volunteered with the Festival of Music and Westside Food Bank over the years. She loved music and singing, and helping those in need. Mary loved going on cruises and travelling - she travelled extensively throughout Europe; Greece, Spain, Turkey, England, Ireland, Scotland and Austria. Mary is survived by her nephew Paul Richards (Cathy) of Vancouver, BC, nieces; Barbara Jones (Ron) of Alberta, Elizabeth Griffith (Peter) of Saint John, NB, and Patti Brennan (Mike) of Saint John, NB, step niece; Mary Saxon of New Hampshire, many grandnieces and grandnephews, and several great grandnieces and nephews. Mary is predeceased by her parents, sister Irene, brothers; Bertram, Joseph, Alvin, James and Vincent. Arrangements are under the care of Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John, NB E2M 2L3. 506-634-1701. A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.
