I feel bad I just discovered this notice this morning. Miss Harris was my grade 2 teacher at Barnhill Memorial School and she remained my very favourite teacher and a lovely friend. My family moved to Fredericton after I finished grade 2 but Miss Harris and I kept in touch through letters, cards and a couple of wonderful visits. I looked forward to her notes and her news - she was always so active and full of life which I always admired. She was a very special lady - and will always be special to me. I'll never forget her nor her kind words.

Dearest Carol, Been waiting to hear from you as this is first time I haven't heard from you this Xmas. It seems I never will again and you never got see your Xmas presents I sent as usual and my letter hoping you were well. What a shock to find your obit and smiling face looking at me from the computer as i was getting worried and was tentatively putting your name in on web searches and there tucked next to all the details and photo of your marriage , this. Dearest Carol I knew you through my Mum and Dad, Naoma and David Bruce. Both of them are gone too. My Dad knew you from being stationed in Nova Scotia with the RAF and you were staunch friends over the years. Mum and Dad used to visit you from the UK. I nearly met you once when you had a cruise booked, but you had to cancel. Dear lady what a wonderful and generous life. You gave so much to everyone. I send my love to you in heaven. I send my condolences to all your family and friends. My waiting was in vain. Rest in peace with the angels dear Carol.

I sit here having just found out....my dear Grade 3 teacher (from Barnhill Memorial School in St. John) with whom I have exchanged hand written letters, seasonal cards, pictures and newspaper articles all the years since, has passed on. I received a Thanksgiving card returned in the mail, and knew something was not right. Carol and I exchanged letters at every season and in between as well. I have a box of her letters, postcards, pictures and notes that I have saved through the years. When our family evacuated in May 2016 from Fort McMurray, it was that box that came with me. We only ever spoke on the phone a couple of times over all these years...our letters to each other said it all. My children were like her grandchildren and her letters were read out loud at our dinner table when they arrived. She is an inspiration and always will be. She is forever in our hearts. Wings well earned Carol. Prayers of strength to George and all family and friends.

Carol was much loved by her English family. Her kindness and generosity were legendary. As a child I had to do a school project on a country of my choice. Of course I chose Canada, as with Canadian relatives I thought I was pretty much an expert. I wrote to tell Carol of my endeavours and shortly afterwards a wonderful package of postcards, leaflets, books and information arrived. Another time in a letter she mentioned having made a 'German Chocolate Cake'. In my reply I asked what exactly that was. The packet to make one arrived a few weeks later... Dear Carol, you connected so well with people and have left many happy memories.

Carol was one in a million. Our ‘Carol in Canada’ was thoughtful, kind and so generous, a true legend! The annual phone call, always around our tea-time on Christmas Day, was so eagerly anticipated as a child. Hearing her familiar voice from so far away was such a treat. The Christmas packages, expertly gift wrapped, neatly packed in a cereal box for protection and then carefully covered in brown paper, brought a uniquely special something to our Christmases here in England. She had a knack for shopping, and I was always amazed at how perfect the gifts were - right from my childhood through to that of my own children. She was so interested in us as people - our interests and hobbies. And now, every room I walk into has a little reminder of her. From the kids’ cutlery to the paper I made my shopping list on this morning. And one of my favourites - a decoration that says “When I think of you, my heart smiles.” And it always will for Carol. She will be dearly missed. So much love to her Canadian family from her English one. x

Carol's grandfather, also William Harris, emigrated to Canada from England in the early 1900s. His younger sister Edith remained here in England, and I am Edith's grand-daughter. Dear Carol has always been known to us on this side of the Atlantic as 'Auntie Carol in Canada'; she has been so kind to us all ever since she saved up and came to visit in the 1950s. She has sent letters (such beautiful writing) and postcards from her travels and has sent us carefully chosen and beautifully wrapped small gifts every Christmas. I remember her excited phone call telling me about George! I'm so pleased I came to Saint John for the wedding, and visited again last year to see Carol and George in their new home. She was so happy! I am very sad that she has passed away. Lots of love to George and all the family. Margaret.

I have known Carol forever. Carol was part of my family before I was. She boarded with my parents when she taught in South Musquash, and stayed friends ever after. When Carol travelled, she shopped, and many of her Christmas gifts were from afar. Two things Carol really liked; deer meat and lobsters. Mom always tried to see that she got these at Christmas. Usually the acquisition of these dainties fell in my lap. Lobsters? Easy, as I was very well acquainted with a lobster fisherman. Deer meat? Not so easy, especially when possession permits and such were required. I told Mom this; "Maybe I won't be able to get Carol's deer meat this year." Mom wouldn't settle for this. " You have GOT to try. Do you realize Carol went half way around the world for my Christmas gift last year!" My prayers and deepest sympathy to George and the family. We have all lost a treasure.

To George and family: Carol was organist and choir director when I became the Pastor at Lancaster Baptist in 1975. We soon realized that we were kindred spirits when it came to music. And then what many of us thought might never happen, she found her true love in George and it was a special privilege to participate in your wedding in November of 2013. In many ways, I think it could be said that Carol became an "institution", especially in circles of teaching and music. She was greatly loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed. The thoughts and prayers of our family are with you during this time of bereavement. May you sense God's comfort and peace. - Rev. Nelson Metcalfe

In later years when I was in the Choir at the church Carol was the Organist and Choir Director...... In all those years and times of being around Carol.... All I can ever remember was her encouraging joyful outlook on life and always encouraging people to do their best, and reach for the top. She never put me down but always helped me to set my sights on the highest and best.... but always with that School Teacher way about her... LOL. I was so happy when I found out she had married....
