So sorry to read of Shane’s passing. Shane and I went to St. Malachy’s back in the early 70’s. We also were in the Naval Reserves ( we had to abandon our rather long hair to join) during the summer of 1972. Shane was always very serious about the navy and I was not surprised that he could turn those teen experiences into a very accomplished career. More importantly, Shane was a great guy who approached each person in a friendly & courteous manner. Condolences to Shane’s wife & family.

Condolences to Kathy and Shane's extended naval family.
I have many fond memories of Shane in Halifax, Saint John, Gagetown and road trips in between.
Very few sailors reach the rank of Chief, and very few officers Command a Ship's Company.
Robbie was in an even smaller cohort who did both.
May his soul rest in peace.

Christa and I wish to send our condolences on the passing of Shane. I have so many great memories of being with Shane at Brunswicker in the early 80's from Gate Boat weekends in Halifax, sharing a tent with him and Pat-laming in the pouring rain, Shane teaching me to drive a 5 ton truck and a deuce and a half. Knowing Shane throughout my early life in the navy has given me many wonderful memories.

I was one of those life long Naval Reserve friends of Shane’s from HMCS Brunswicker. Even though I haven’t seen him in years, the bond of shipmates are lasting. I love some of the reminiscences “a tall giant” and “tall and elegant”- both are spot on! He was always quick with a smile and a joke and I am so glad to have known him. God bless you Shane!

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Shane's passing. I first met Shane many years ago, when I began working as a legal assistant for the then LCdr O'Connell. Over the span of twenty-three years, as Bill was promoted up the ranks of the Naval Reserve, lastly being promoted to Commodore and appointed to the position of Commander NAVRES, Shane was my "Go To" person. After the events of September 11th, Shane and I worked very closely together assisting Bill navigating our way through the added highly sensitive protocol that came into play in the the day to day events in the Navy. Whenever I ran into problems with my added responsibility as Bill's Naval assistant, it was Shane who I called upon for help. Whether it was to check the spelling of the name of a Naval Reserve Unit, to ask for assistance in completing a PER or to pick his brain on something that was all new to me but second hand to Shane, he always willingly shared his wealth of Navy protocol without hesitation or even a complaint. In his civilian life, Shane was fortunate to share it with Kathy, his soulmate. My condolences and prayers are being sent to Kathy and all of Shane's family, including his Naval family and friends, as they mourn their loss. Rest easy Shane. As Bill would say, "we have the watch".

My sincere condolences go out to all of his Family, Friends and his many Shipmates...
I remember vividly the first time I met Shane. I was a 12 year old sea cadet waiting on the steps of the old HMCS Brunswicker, when this really tall giant got out of his car and stopped and spoke to me. Shane was the Coxswain of HMCS Brunswicker at that time, and because I was so young and a lot smaller then Shane, for several years, I was terrified of this man that always towered over me.
Then when I became an officer with the sea Cadets and he was an Officer with Brunswicker, we crossed paths many of times, having to work together. He was no longer a Giant to me, nor was I afraid of him anymore, you just had to know how to take Shane and his unique Sense of humor and find a way to win him over. That is what I actually loved about him, if he knew you could hold your own, you made it onto his good list. I have always had such great respect for this man and loved running into him and Kathy after he retired, he would always try to rattle my cage some how, but I would rattle his and remind him of how much of a softy he was and on most occasions that would follow with a hug while Kathy would stand back and laugh. This one is tough and very raw, he is going to be missed by so many who were lucky to know him in any capacity.
