Obituary of Carolyn Thom

It is with very heavy hearts that the family of J. Carolyn (Machum) Thom announce her passing on April 26th, 2024, at Kennebec Manor in Saint John, at the age of 95.  Carolyn was born on March 12th, 1929 in Hampstead NBthe daughter of Althea and Clarence Machum.

Carolyn was predeceased by her parents Althea and Clarence Machum, infant sister Sally, sister Barbara Boudreau, husband Dennis Thom, daughter Judy Thom and daughter in-law Georgette (Bernard) Thom. She is survived by her children Paulette (Ron) of Langley, BC, Paul of Saint John, Jo-Anne (Don) of Abbotsford, BC, Don (Lynn) of Saint John and Rob (Angela) of Lower Greenwich, NB, her sisters Marion Estey, Muriel Wark and Ramona Waring, all of Saint John, her 10 cherished grandchildren Jason, Jonathan, Sheri, Andrew, Erika, Jeremy, Jodi, Gina, Cassandra and Alexander as well as 17 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Dennis and Carolyn made their first home in New Jerusalem and moved to Saint John after expropriation. Carolyn became active in The Highland Society promoting the family's Scottish heritage which saw Dennis and all their children participate with the Kiwanis and Caledonia Pipe Bands. Pipes, Drums, Highland Dance and Highland Games became a way of life for the family with many awards gathered, some from international competitions in Scotland. This celebration of the Scottish heritage continues today, now entering a fourth generation of the Thom Clan.

Carolyn's hobbies also included gathering and restoring antique furniture.  She took great pride in several duncan phyfe sets and an organ she restored which are still proudly displayed by her family. She also had a keen interest in real estate as they acquired and upgraded various homes and their special property near Brown's Flat known as “Braeside”.

Her true passion and purpose was always family and friends. She enjoyed visiting and catching up with everyone. If she was hosting, you could expect a delicious homemade treat as cooking was another one of her talents.

The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the staff of Kennebec Manor for outstanding care and compassion for so many years.

Arrangements are through Castle Fallsview Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave., Saint John, NB, ( 506-634-1701). Visitation will be held on Friday, May 3, 2024 from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Following Carolyn's wishes there will be a Graveside Service Saturday May 4th, 2024 at 1:00 PM at the Wesley United cemetery Brown's Flat. A gathering will immediately follow at the River Road Hub, 32 Wallace Road, Brown's Flat.
