Obituary of James Michael Barry
It is with great sadness that the family of James Michael (“Jim”) Barry wishes to announce his unexpected passing on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at the Saint John Regional Hospital with his family by his side.
Born in Saint John, N.B., Jim was one of two sons of the late Gerard Arthur (“Mike”) Barry and Marie Catherine (Walton) Barry.
From his earliest days, Jim (or “Jimmy” as he was then called by the family), was fiercely independent. Gifted with a searing intellect and a remarkable proficiency with all things technical, Jim forged a lifelong passion for music, and spent many years playing local gigs in Saint John. In addition to music, Jim had a lifelong “side hustle”: pool. He was exceedingly good at it. He might have lightened more than a few wallets of lessor competitors at the pool hall, but no tally was tracked.
Jim’s independence met its match in Jane. The two were married September 18, 1982 and enjoyed 41 years together. Jim always had great love and pride for their daughters, Susan and Lisa.
With his family’s support, Jim made a significant decision later in life - to change course and head off to law school. He was called to the New Brunswick Bar in 1999. He practiced at Gilbert McGloan Gillis and later with the firm of Canty Lutz Grant.
In his later years, he thoroughly enjoyed the visits with the grandkids, and they rewarded him throughout with lots of love and laughter.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Jane (Galbraith) Barry; two daughters, Susan (Andrew) Brillant, and Lisa Russell, both of Saint John; five grandchildren, Claire Brillant, Jack Brillant, Jake Russell, Katie Russell, and Ellen Brillant; one brother, T. Arthur (“Art”) Barry, of Dartmouth, N.S.; two sisters, Suzanne (Bob) Shepherd, of Halifax, N.S., and Anna (Gordie) Plagenz, of Saint John; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Gerard Arthur (“Mike”) Barry and Marie Catherine (Walton) Barry.
The arrangements are under the care and direction of Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave. Saint John, N.B. (506 634 1701). A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 16. 2023 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Celebration of Jim’s life will take place on Friday, November 17, 2023, at Castle “Fallsview” Chapel at 11:00 am. Interment will take place in Cedar Hill ext. Cemetery. A reception will be held following interment. Online condolences can be made at www. Castlefh.ca.
