Dear Steen family,
I will never forget the feeling of belonging and love that Mrs Steen created in her classroom. I was lucky to have spent my grade one year at Island View learning from her. She always greeted me with a hug and would continue that when I saw her at church and as an adult. When I became a teacher myself, she surprised me by showing up at my first school with boxes of pencils and stickers for my students and a card for me. I will carry her kindness and love with me throughout my career.

Joan was at Island View when I taught there and was so well respected by her peers, parents and children. She had a lovely calming way with the children, and a delightful sense of fun and humour. She was always eager to help anyone, in any way. Even when she retired she offered to come in to do running records for any of the teachers (which we certainly appreciated!). She was a bright light in every way, and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Dear Doug, Ted, Paul and families:
I had the wonderful privilidge of being assigned to Island View School the same fall as Joan. My list will be never ending of the attributes and skills Joan brought to the teaching profession, a true educator. Her love of life and compassion for everyone she met was so encouraging, opening up her home on so many occasions, one our daughters will never forget "building ginger bread houses " ! The loyalist dresses she made our daughters to help celebrate what we did at IVS are still with us today. Joan's support and encouragement she always gave to our daughters and countless others will remain in hearts forever. Joan was genuine and what a privilidge to have taught with her, a fellow colleague, true friend, and will truly be missed.
Our sincere condolences to her family and friends.

I was very sorry to hear about Joan’s passing. I particularly remember Joan from school district Heritage Fairs. I remember the year the district fair was in Hampton. I was there because one of my granddaughters was a participant. I watched her connecting with the students as she and others judged the entries. I noticed how personable Joan was with each student, making them feel proud of their work. Her interest in each student’s project was genuine.
I believe Joan’s kind and creative nature is shining through her many former students and adult friends as well.
I wish to convey my sympathy to you and your sons.

We were deeply saddened to learn of Joan’s passing. I first met Joan in 1981 as a new teacher at Barnhill where both of her sons Ted and Paul were students. I remember that Joan was always very supportive of her boys’ participation in school activities. As Doug mentioned, Joan was integral in raising 2 fine young boys. Our daughter Lyla was born in 1984 and we would move from Greendale to Mahogany Heights so Lyla would have Mrs.Steen for her Grade One teacher. She provided Lyla with the great start needed by the magical touch of a talented teacher. Leo, Summer, Lyla Coyle

Oh! There are no words... I am attaching a picture of 'Auntie Joan' walking up from the beach at the Upper House. Joan taught me so much about kindness, joy and how to make someone feel special. I am a much different person because of Joan's presence in my life. I am deeply grateful that we had the chance to see each other this past summer. Much love to your aching hearts, Cathy

It was many, many years ago that I did my teaching practicum at Island View (with Faye Johnston) - and Joan was one of the teachers there at the time. It’s funny how one always wonders for years how certain folk are getting on - I always wondered about Joan. I don’t know why, except that she was exemplary and loved her job and I wanted to emulate that, perhaps. I never followed up on those wonderings. Was saddened to read of her passing… She was a great person. Deepest condolences to all of her family and friends.

From the time I first met Joan in a teaching capacity at Prince Charles, I knew she was a very special person. She helped me ease in to my assignment as a special education teacher. Later I taught at Island View where Joan had been teaching many years. Our families attended St. Mark’s church where Joan was always helping out in so many ways. Creative, fun, smart and the children under her care were truly blessed. We all will miss dear Joan very much.
