Obituary of Allan Burton Cameron

Allan Burton Cameron suddenly passed away on May 15, 2023 at the Saint John Regional Hospital after suffering a massive stroke.  He was 69. Born on March 7th, 1954 to Burton and Kathryn (Taylor) Cameron in Moncton. Allan attended the University of New Brunswick where he completed an undergraduate and masters degree in Electrical Engineering benefitting from a variety of bursaries and scholarships.

Allan, MScEE, BScEE was a trailblazer in New Brunswick’s telecommunications and information technology landscape. He spent 20 years in a variety of Engineering and Planning roles with the New Brunswick Telephone Company. During this time he was a key player in developing the universal voicemail system that was eventually deployed across Canada, the first secure wide area health network using Internet Protocol networking and the design and development of technology for NBTel’s broadband network.  As the telecom and television worlds started to converge, Allan developed many technologies for TV including Caller ID and interactive TV via an analog telephone line.  In 1998, Allan co-founded and was the Chief Technology Office (CTO) for an NBTel subsidiary, iMagicTV.  He devised the original concept for "TV over copper" enabling the ability to transmit broadcast TV to viewers over regular telephone copper lines. This was a major innovation for telephone companies globally.  This company was eventually taken public being listed on the NASDAQ and Toronto stock exchanges. In 2003 Allan joined Anyware Group, a company that delivered communications services to the North American and Caribbean marketplace. As their CTO, Allan was instrumental in creating ROAM, a highly secure remote access technology that was used to link hospitals and medical professionals to patient information from anywhere in the world. Allan ended his illustrious career with his name on 9 patents as co-inventor for telecom and television related technologies.

Allan is survived by his wife of nearly 34 years, Diane, son James (Kathryn), grandson Arthur, brother Bruce, in-laws, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Burton Allan Cameron and Kathryn Edwinna Cameron.

A technically brilliant problem-solver, caring family man with strong values, Allan was a devoted loving husband, father, brother, uncle and son-in-law. He always looked to capture candid moments of joy and customizing solutions for any problem. He will be greatly missed. His passing is far too soon and he will forever be in our hearts.
