Obituary of Frederick Tilley
The death of Frederick James (Ted) Tilley, husband of C. Isabel Tilley occurred Monday, Nov. 18, 2013 at Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on Nov. 1, 1923 in Fredericton NB, Ted was a son of the late Carleton F. and Ella P. (Ring) Tilley. Ted moved with his family to Saint John at a young age, attended local schools and graduated from Saint John High School. After graduation Ted joined the R.C.A.F. and served overseas until the war ended in 1945. Ted was mentioned in several despatches for outstanding service. Upon returning home Ted joined the firm of Parker D. Mitchell Ltd., a prominent coal and fuel oil dealer. After Mr. Mitchell’s death in 1963 Ted became president and general manager of the firm serving in that capacity until his retirement in 1995. Ted was active in the community having served many years with the Saint John Board of Trade, Rotary Club, past president of the Saint John Executive Association and a long time board member of the Protestant Orphanage Home. He was a 50 year member of the Canadian Oil Heat Association and a 50 year member of the Royal Kennebecasis Yacht Club. Ted was also very active in the Masonic fraternity. He was a 60 year member and past master of Carleton Union Lodge #8, Past Potentate of Luxor Temple Shriners and a past director of the Royal Order of Jesters Court 149. He was a Past First Principal of Union Chapter #4, Past Thrice Illustrious Master of Carleton Council #2, Past Preceptor of Saint John Demolay Preceptory #3, member of McLeod Moore Conclave #1 Red Cross of Constantine, member of the Scottish Rite and the Royal Order of Scotland. He was a member of the Anglican Church being a parishioner of the Church of the Good Shepherd. Ted is survived by his wife of 68 years, Isabel (Mitchell), sons Robert (Kathy), Carl (Elaine); 6 grandchildren; Michael (Andrea), Jennifer, Heather (Greg Davis), Christopher, Tammy (Dr. Tony Reiman), Peter (Nona) and 7 great-grandchildren. Ted is also survived by his brother-in-law David Mitchell of Long Reach, 1 niece and 3 nephews. Ted was predeceased by his sister Marie McClure of Wilmington Delaware. Resting at Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave., Saint John, NB, E2M 2L3. Visitation will be held Friday, November 22, 2013 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. A Funeral Service will take place Saturday, November 23, 2013 from Castle “Fallsview” Chapel at 10:00am. Interment will follow the service at Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. A Reception will be held following the interment at the Castle “Fallsview” Reception Center. Donations made to the Luxor Shriners Hospital or to the charity of the donor’s choice would be greatly appreciated by the family. Online condolences can be made at www.castlefh.com
