Aunt Alma, Patricia and Margaret,I'm so sorry to hear of Uncle Fred's passing. Lynn, the boys, and I send our deepest condolences. Growing up in our extended West Side family, Uncle Fred provided both example and encouragement to be your best and do the right thing. If you were old enough to talk, Fred always had time for a conversation about your current activities. He took a genuine interest in understanding the passion that was driving you, whatever the direction you were headed. He was always there for family and friends whenever asked, to lend his talents for a bit of spit and polish, making the good times that much better and the sad times that much more bearable. Uncle Fred had his opinions but knew there were two sides to every story. He could always relate to both. Staunchly Irish, he showed no fear but was always able to keep his fighting in the shadows and put his best foot forward. What a life! What a man! Always Uncle Fred!

Fred was a wonderful writer and left a lasting legacy at the Telegraph-Journal, Evening Times Globe, and this city. He and my uncle Gerry Childs worked together for many years. And later, I had the pleasure to edit his column during my time in the newsroom. My heart goes out to you and your family at this time. Prayers and comfort to you.

Fred Hazel was my first boss after I became a journalist and went to work at The Telegraph Journal/The Evening Times Globe, in 1984. He was also a neighbour, and my friend Margaret's father. I always thought he would be a terrific father to have... steady, caring, with a slightly mischievous sense of humour. I recall Fred striding energetically through the newsroom and pausing to comment on a story I'd written, or ask about an assignment. He was a fine, fair newspaperman who was a great mentor to me and many other young reporters. When I visited the Hazel's home, I would often hear him bashing away at his typewriter in the basement, or singing "O Danny Boy" or some other Irish ballad somewhere down the hallway. He had a way with words in whatever form they flowed from him! Alma, Margaret, and Patrcia, I'm so sorry for your loss. Fred, thanks for guidance and support. I hope you knew how much it's meant. -30-

I have fond memories of the trips to Ireland and other European countries I made as part of group tours organized by Fred and his loving wife Alma and the great times we had. And I remember his love for all things Irish and his beautiful renditions of the Irish classics “Danny Boy” and “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.” I am sure he is busy now putting out the latest edition of the Heavenly Times. Fred was a close friend of my in-laws, the Dunphys and I recall his genial hospitality and his inspiring conversation with profound appreciation. One memorable experience occurred when we decided to take a winter's walk and ended up sheltering from the -30 temperatures at his home where we enjoyed an afternoon of Irish coffees until Rita Dunphy could come and pick us up in the car. A true gentleman.

None of us can, or even want to, write that final chapter of our lives. Life is too precious. So it was for my old boss Fred Hazel, who managed to hang onto the gift of time he believed came to all of us from God Almighty, longer than most. Despite frail health, he never stopped writing, travelling and making the most of the days he and his darling wife Alma were allowed to spend together on this old sod. Now Alma, we ask that the peace of God that passeth all understanding will surround you and your extended family in these difficult and dark days for any family. Good night, Mr. Hazel. - 30 -
