Obituary of Henry Charles Gifford
Gifford, Henry Charles “Nick” The death of Mr. H.C. “Nick” Gifford, husband of Helen (Byers) Gifford occurred on August 7, 2011 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Kent Co. on February 16, 1918, he was the son of the late Theresa (Clarke) and James A. Gifford. Nick worked the port as a steamship checker with ILA Local 273 for 50 years, as well as being a painter and interior decorator. Mr. and Mrs. Gifford raised 104 foster children from 1945 until 1985. He is survived by his wife Helen, two sons: Michael J. (Sandra) Gifford, and Daniel J. Gifford, daughters: Elizabeth Ann Hamilton, Phyllis Anne (Gilles) Morris of Miramichi, Shirley (William) Walsh, Frances (Dave) MacDonald, Anne Margaret (George) Breau, all of Saint John, and Mary (Mark) Richard of Woodstock, 18 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, a daughter Barbara Gifford, grandchildren Heidi and Billy Gifford, brothers Frank Gifford and David Gifford, and sisters Dorothy Reicker, Ellen Babineau, and Veronica Randall. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Resting at Castle “Fallsview” Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John West (634-1701) with visiting on Tuesday from 7 – 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 – 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery. Following the interment a reception will take place at Fallsview Family Reception Centre. Online condolences may be placed at www.castlefh.com
