Obituary of James MacGillivray

James Donald MacGillivray passed away with dignity and grace on May 18, 2012 at Trinity Village Long Term Care Facility in Kitchener, Ontario. Born on May 6th, 1925, he was the son of James J. MacGillivray and Geraldine (Bowes) MacGillivray. Jim will be missed by his beloved wife of 58 years, Lorna (nee Doone), his children, Johann (Brian Gallant) of Kitchener, Sandra (Michael Lonergan) of Peterborough, and Donald (Marisa) of Woodbridge; and his 7 grandchildren: Phillip, Patrick, and Edward; Samantha and Erin; Logan and Alexander. He is survived by his brother Philip N. (Inez) of Saint John and will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Gerald, a sister Theresa and an infant brother John. Jim started off as a teacher and principal in New Brunswick for 4 years before entering the University of New Brunswick where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree in Economics in 1952. Jim started his career in Sarnia, Ontario in 1952 with Imperial Oil Limited transferring to Edmonton in 1955 and then to Toronto in 1962 where he remained with the company until his retirement. Jim was a member of the Accredited Appraiser Canadian Institute. After his retirement in 1982, Jim served as a member of the Assessment Review Board for another 14 years, before dividing his time between his home in Cambridge Narrows, New Brunswick and winters in Lakeland, Florida. After his last stroke in 2006 Jim spent his final 6 years in the care of the staff of Trinity Village. A special thanks from the MacGillivray family to the number of individuals on staff at Trinity who have taken the extra care to ensure that Jim enjoyed the most of his last few years. Jim will be resting at Castle Funeral Home, Saint John, N.B. on Wednesday, May 23rd, from 2-4, and 7-9 pm, The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption on Thursday, May 24th at noon, before interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. For friends and family in Ontario, a memorial service will be held at St. Anthony Daniel’s Parish, 29 Midland Ave., Kitchener on Saturday June 2nd at 1:00 pm. Friends and family will be received after the service. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Ontario Federation of Cerebral Palsy would be appreciated.
