Obituary of Bernardo Rocca

Rocca, Bernardo- of Saint John, NB passed away, unexpectedly, on Friday, July 27, 2012. Born on October 3, 1923, Loving husband of the late Giovanna (Mercuri) Rocca for 68 years. He was the son of the late Pasquale and Maria Rocca. In 1993, his family established a bursary at UNB, Saint John Campus on their 50th wedding anniversary , for single mothers attending UNBSJ. The Bursary is awarded annually based on financial need rather than academic achievement. The scholarship was set up to honor the sacrifices Bernardo's wife, Giovanna made during the 12 years she raised her children alone while Bernardo moved to Canada to make a better life for their children. He is survived by his sons, Pat,[Joan,deceased] of Burlington Ont, Saverio (Jackie) of Saint John, John (Gail), of Saint John; one brother, Nicola Rocca of Riverview, N.B., brother-in-law, Joe (Millie) Mercuri, of Saint John; Sister in law Rosaria Mercuri,of Saint John, eight grandchildren; Sixteen great-grandchildren; one niece: Anna (Joe) Spataro of Riverview, N.B.; one nephew, Saverio Rocca of Riverview, N.B.; numerous, great nieces and nephews; several great great nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, he is predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Joan (Quinlan) Rocca; sister-in-laws, Caterina Rocca and Carmena Mastroianni, and brothers-in-law, Nicola Mercuri and Teodoro Mercuri; Resting at Castle Funeral Home, "Fallsview Chapel", 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John West (634-1701). Visitation will take place on Friday, August 3, 2012 from 3-9p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at 10:00a.m.at St. Rose of Lima Church, 541 Milford Road, Saint John. Interment will follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
