Obituary of Theresa Mary McGinnis

McGinnis, Theresa Mary (O’Neil) passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 11, 2013 at the Ridgewood Veterans Wing. Born on May 20, 1921 in Baie-Sainte-Anne, N.B.. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Jimmo) O’Neil. She was the wife of the late Francis J. McGinnis. Theresa completed her education and worked as a teachers aid in the local school. At eighteen she moved to Fredericton and took a position as a caregiver. In 1939 she joined the Canadian Army and worked as a clerk in Sussex, N.B. She was injured and then recovered for a year at the DVA Hospital in Saint John. When she left the army she took a hairdressing course. While in Saint John she met her future husband and they began a life together. She enjoyed a crowd around the table and serving hot tea and fresh baked goods. She is survived by her three sons, Richard (Flo), Joseph (Susan), Donald (Barbara), all of Saint John; grandchildren, Karen (Scott), Janet, Robert, Cody, Vanessa, Justin, Ian, Craig; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Meghan, Emma; numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband Francis, she was predeceased by her siblings, Ray, Tom, Mary, Helen, Cecilia and Anna; granddaughter, Colleen. A special thank you to Rose Lingley who took excellent care of our mother. Resting at Castle Funeral Home, “Fallsview Chapel”, 309 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John West, (634-1701). Visitation will take place on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., with a legion service at 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at 12:00 pm. from Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Interment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Following interment there will be a reception held at the Assumption Centre. Donations may be made to Ridgewood Veterans Wing or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
