Obituary of Gordon Melvin Downey

Gordon Melvin Downey passed away peacefully on Monday, July 25, 2022, at Bobby’s Hospice. Gordon was born on October 15, 1929, in Saint John, NB to the late Carroll Estes and Maloa (McCrea) Downey.

Gordon is survived by his children; Carolyn Stevens (Roy), Daniel Downey, and Mark Downey, sisters; Barbara Maguire and Carol Roach (William), granddaughters; Bethany and Julie Stevens (Shayne), several nieces, nephews, and cousins out west.

In addition to his parents Gordon is predeceased by his wife Eleanor (Dean) Downey, son Wesley Downey, brother Lloyd Downey and brother-in-law Ralph Maguire.

Gordon worked for many years with CPR at the winter port loading trains and later as a checker, and the summer months he worked construction. Gordon, his brother Lloyd, and brother-in-law William started Spartan Construction together. He was an extremely hard worker, even up into his 80’s Gordon enjoyed staying active and busy; especially by splitting wood in his back yard.

Gordon was an avid reader and enjoyed working on crossword puzzles.   As a youngster he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his own personal Saviour and was with those gathered to the Lord’s Name in Lorneville for his whole adult life.   He actively participated in all the various meetings of the assembly there.  He was truly a man of God, he loved reading ministry and scripture to share with friends and family.   Gordon was a quiet and peaceful man throughout his life, but his silence spoke volumes. Gordon got along with everyone, and he had a smile that would light up a room, for which many nicknamed him Smiley.

Resting at Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John, NB E2M 2L3, 506-634-1701. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 29th from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM. A Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, July 30th at 11:00 AM in Castle Fallsview Chapel. Interment will follow in Lorneville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in Gordon’s memory can be made to Bobby’s Hospice, Lorneville Cemetery, Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
