Obituary of Kathleen Brenda Lomas

It is with great sadness that the family of Brenda Lomas, 87, announces her peaceful passing on April 3, 2019 at Bobby’s Hospice in Saint John, New Brunswick. Brenda will be greatly missed by her children, David (Karol) of Summerville, NB; Tony (Maria) of Pierrefonds, PQ; Susan (Ali) of Sechelt, BC; and Chris of Montreal, PQ. She was also very close to her nephew Peter (Dana) in Texas and niece Joanna (David) in Georgia. Her grandchildren Emily, Nathan, Myles, James, Adam, Thomas, Jasmine, Lily, Isabelle, Christina and Violet along with nephews, great-nephews and great-nieces Michael, Brian, Jonathan, Jennifer, Jessica, Alex and Nicholas were all very dear to her. She was delighted to learn before her passing that a great-grandchild was finally on the way. Brenda was predeceased by her parents Kathleen and Frank Moore Dean, her sister Joan Davies, who was like a second mother to her, and her brother-in-law Dr. John Davies. Brenda is also greatly missed by her faithful four-legged companion Maggie. Brenda was born on June 12, 1931 in Surrey, England and raised in St. Austell, Cornwall, UK. Before moving to Cornwall as a young child, she fondly remembered the smell of cocoa from the Fry’s factory near her home and to which she attributed her lifelong and deep connection to chocolate. Living by the sea in Cornwall provided a lifelong love of seafood, especially lobster and fish & chips. Following in the footsteps of her grandmother and sister she became a nurse at Middlesex Hospital in London before taking a commission in the British army. She was posted to West Germany and later to Ghana in Africa before eventually resigning her commission to return to England to marry Brian Lomas. Brenda and Brian immigrated to Canada, following her sister to Winnipeg, where she continued in nursing before starting a family and later moving to Montreal. After the end of her marriage to Brian, Brenda resumed her career in nursing and retired with many years of service at the Veterans Hospital in Sainte-Anne-De-Bellevue, Quebec. She snowbirded over the winter for many years in Florida and Texas in addition to spending parts of the summer in Ingonish, Cape Breton, NS in the company of her beloved sister Joan where they would spend much of the time reminiscing and laughing. She often would fly to BC and Montreal to visit family. Brenda really enjoyed her years in Saint John, NB at the Chateau-De-Champlain residence in Millidgeville. Brenda’s life was not without personal struggles, disappointments and challenges, but in the end was marked by peace, happiness and love. Brenda’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation to all the doctors, nurses, assistants and staff at the Saint John Regional Hospital and at Bobby’s Hospice for the outstanding care and comfort provided to her. Thanks also to the staff and management at the Chateau-De-Champlain for all their support and kindness during her time there. Arrangements are under the care of Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John, NB E2M 2L3, 506-634-1701. A Private Family interment will be held at a later date in Montreal at Rideau Gardens Cemetery. Donations in Brenda’s memory can be made to Bobby’s Hospice at www.hospicesj.ca.
