Obituary of Eileen “Betty” Elizabeth Miller

It is with great sadness that the family of Eileen “Betty” Elizabeth (Dunham) Miller announce her peaceful passing on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Betty was the loving wife of Gerald for 63 great years. She was born on August 10, 1936 to the late William and Mary (Johnston) Dunham in Saint John, NB. She was predeceased by her parents and sister Jean Ramey. After graduating from Teacher’s College in Fredericton, Betty started her teaching career at King Edward school in the south end of Saint John. She taught briefly at Beaconsfield School before transferring to New Albert Elementary School for the remainder of 35-year career. At New Albert there were two Mrs’ Millers, Elizabeth and Agnus. Many of her grade two students thought her name was Mrs Emiller. Betty had a life long passion for learning. After receiving her Teaching Certificate, she went back to university at UNB Saint John and UNB Fredericton to complete her Bachelor of Arts in History, and Bachelor of Education attending part-time classes every summer. After she completed a course in geology, family drives included lessons on rock formations along the way. When not attending summer school to receive her degrees, Betty loved going on trips with her family. Camping at Mactaquac Provincial Park was a family favourite with her sister Lorna and mother Mary joining them for many fun-filled summers; they made many fond memories at Mactaquac over the years. She enjoyed playing cards with her husband and friends and hosted (and attended) many Saturday night card parties. She was an enthusiastic knitter, sewer, gardener, and an avid speed reader. A life-long Anglican, and a woman of deep faith, Betty was a long-time member of the Church of the Good Shepherd. She was a member of the Anglican Church Women (ACW), taught Sunday School, served on the church vestry, and played a part in saving the beautiful church organ from being removed, and the steeple from being torn down after a fire. Betty will be dearly missed by her loving husband Gerald, her daughters Angela Miller (R. Craig Dunn), Lisa Miller-Snow (Rick Snow), son Jason Miller (Jennifer), grandchildren Rebecca Snow and Sean Miller, sister Lorna Taylor (Don), nieces Cynthia and Stephanie Taylor, great niece Kendehl Taylor, brother-in-law Robert Ramey, nephew Scott Ramey (Moncton), and her beloved Siamese cats, Tai Pan and Mi Nam. The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff of the GEM unit on the 5th floor and restorative care unit on the 7th floor of St. Joseph’s hospital. We truly appreciate their professionalism, thoughtfulness and superb treatment of Betty. Arrangements are under the care of Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John, NB E2M2L3 506-634-1701. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 28th at 10:00AM at The Church of the Good Shepherd. Interment will follow in The Church of the Good Shepherd Cemetery with reception afterwards at the Church. Donations in Betty’s memory can be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd, the Diabetic Association, MS Society, or charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences can be made at www.castlefh.com
