Obituary of Edgar Merrill Nearing
Mr. Edgar Merrill Nearing, 95, of Grand Bay –Westfield, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 28th, 2020 at the Saint John Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Merrill was born on September 14, 1925 in Sackville, NB to the late Edgar Francis and Ethel Viola (Merrill) Nearing. Merrill was a proud WWII veteran, he served on board the HMS Uganda as an PomPom Gunner. After the war, Merrill began his career with CP rail. He started as a fireman and eventually worked his way up to being an engineer, which he did for many years. Merrill enjoyed duck hunting, gardening, golfing, listening to music, watching sports on TV and was a self-proclaimed family food critic. Merrill is survived by his wife of 73 years, Agnes (Boyle) Nearing, children; Marilyn Holt of Florida, Patrick Nearing of Ontario, Keith Nearing (Linda) of B.C, Mark Nearing (Sana) of Nerepis, NB and Carolin Nearing of Grand Bay- Westfield, grandchildren; Chuck Nearing, Jeff Nearing, Chris Nearing, Kevin Holt, Ryan Dryhurst, Stephanie Hennig, Amanda Nearing, Emily Nearing, Nathan Nearing, sister in law Glennis (Lee) Boyce, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, son Michael M. (Diane) Nearing, brother Charles Nearing (Anna), and sister Dorothy N. (Sterling) Miller. Arrangements have been entrusted with Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John, NB E2M 2L3, 506-634-1701. Keeping with Merrill’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no service. Donations in Merrill’s memory can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
