Obituary of Muriel Anita Mawhinney

It is with great sadness the family of Muriel Anita Mawhinney announce her passing on June 6th, 2018 at Spencer Nursing Home in Moncton, NB surrounded by her loving family. She was the devoted wife of Gordon Mawhinney. Muriel was born on December 5, 1927 in Deer Island, NB to the late Heber and Edna (McCarthy) Richardson. Muriel was a graduate of Deer Island Regional High School, she attended business College in St. Stephen, N.B. then returned to Deer Island and was employed as Postmistress and worked at the General Store in Richardson as a bookkeeper. Muriel then went to Saint John, worked for a Paint Company married and had five children. The family then moved to Moncton and Muriel worked at the Moncton Hospital as Head of Central Scheduling and aided in setting up the 1st Computer system for Central Scheduling at the hospital. Muriel served as secretary of Victoria St. Baptist Church, President of the Women’s Missionary Society, was a member of the IODE, the Red Hat Society, and was treasurer of the Chance Harbour Baptist Church. Muriel enjoyed travelling with family and friends to various parts of the world. In retirement she and Gordon spent winters in California, Arizona, and Florida. She will be dearly missed by her husband, son , Gordon Mawhinney (Cynthia DeKluyver) of Rothesay, Jane Franklin (Nick) of Halifax, N.S., Joel Mawhinney (Brenda Colpitts) of Riverview, Jonathan Mawhinney (Jane) of Moncton, N.B, one brother, Stanley (Merva) Richardson, of Fredericton, sister Patricia Matthews of Vancouver, and sister-in-law, Vera Richardson of Fredericton, six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Muriel is predeceased by her parents, one daughter Jennifer Mawhinney March, brother Everett Richardson, and one brother-in law Hollis Matthews. Arrangements are under the care of Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John, NB E2M2L3. 506-634-1701. A funeral service will take place on Saturday June 9, 2018 at 2PM at Fundy Seaside Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Maces Bay Cemetery.
