Obituary of Monica Ann Ewart

Ewart, Monica Ann It is with broken hearts that the family of Monica Ann Ewart, beloved wife of Gary Ewart, announces her passing on Saturday, February 22nd, 2020 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John on December 15th, 1945, she was the only child of the late Charles Albert Kottas and Helen Pearl (Steen) Kottas. Monica received two degrees from Mount Allison University and obtained her Masters of Education at the University of New Brunswick. The early part of her teaching occurred in Port Elgin, NB and Saskatoon, SK. Later, Monica returned to Saint John, where she spent the rest of her career specializing in pupil evaluation and working as a resource teacher. Although she retired in 2002, Monica demonstrated her enduring commitment to children and education by generously volunteering her time in various elementary schools in the Saint John area. Monica was also a very talented artist. She belonged to a special club called “The Thursday Painters”, where she developed many long-term friendships and produced many exceptional works in oil and acrylic. She loved travelling, shopping, going to the beach, gardening, nature, and the outdoors. Her husband, children, grandchildren, and beloved German Shepherd, Lacey, meant everything to her. Her daughter Sara will miss the frequent phone calls with her mom, as they talked almost every day. Monica’s face lit up every time the phone rang. Monica is survived by her beloved husband Gary Ewart, her children Mark (Mariann) Gillan of Grand Bay-Westfield and Sara Ewart of Saint John, and her six grandchildren Meredith Garnett, Colby Garnett, Noah Currie, Victoria Gillan, Jonathan Gillan, and Jason Gillan. She will be greatly missed by her extended family and many friends. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the ladies in Monica’s art club, who provided assistance in her time of need. It brings comfort to her loved ones to know that her final activity was creating the art she loved, with people that she cared about greatly. The family is also grateful for the outstanding care Monica received from the staff at the Saint John Regional Hospital, especially Dr. Kolyvas and the nurses in the neuro-intensive care unit. Monica is resting at Saint Andrew’s Kirk United Church, 196 Hammond River Road, Quispamsis. Visitation will occur on Tuesday, February 25th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The funeral service will take place on Wednesday, February 26th, at 11:00 am. The reception will be held in the church hall following the service. Interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Parkinson’s Foundation, or Saint Andrew’s Kirk United Church, would be appreciated by the family.
