Obituary of John Gregory O’Neill
It is with great sadness that the family of John Gregory O’Neill announces his unexpected passing on February 18, 2019 at Ridgewood Veteran’s Wing, just 9 days after the passing of his beloved wife Fay Vivian. Born in Petersville, NB July 9, 1929, he was the oldest child of the late Andrew and Dorothy (Brown) O’Neill. Despite stellar academic performance, circumstances took him out of school at a young age to help support his family. After moving to Saint John for work he would meet his wife of almost 67 years, Fay. Together they would have 7 children, 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. After retiring in 1995 from a 38 year career with Moosehead Breweries, Greg and Fay operated O’Neill’s Bed and Breakfast. A well respected man, Greg will be remembered by loved ones as being a hard worker, skilled vegetable gardener and consummate handy man. Honoring and caring for his family was always foremost in his life. Greg is survived by brother Basil (Karen) of Michigan, sister Mary Elgee of Florida, sons Trent (Monique), John, Shawn, daughter May (Vince) of Saint John and daughter Erin (Jason) of Fredericton; grandchildren Tiffany, Krista-Leigh, Shannon, Jerrod, Holly, Keri, Cassandra, Clinton, Calvin, Andrew, Samantha, Dorothy and Karen. Besides his wife, Greg was predeceased by his sister Dorothy Beyea, brothers Tom, Ed, Gerry, Francis; daughters Trina (Bill Eldridge) and Diane (Jim Glass) and grandson Patrick. Resting at Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John NB, E2M 2L3. 506-634-1701. A visitation will take place Thursday, February 21 from 3-7 pm. A Royal Canadian Legion Service will be held at 6 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, 360 Dufferin Row, Saint John on Friday February 22 at 12 noon with a reception to follow at Castle Funeral Home, Fallsview Reception Center. Interment will take place at a later date in Holy Cross Cemetery. For those who wish, donations in Greg’s honor can be made to a foundation or charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences can be made at www.castlefh.com. The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Ridgewood Veteran’s Wing for their excellent care and support. Also to Rocmaura for their loving care and support of Greg during Fay’s years of residence.
