The alumni of Simonds High School would like to express sincere sympathy to the family of Art Pottle. Not only did he inspire and educate through teaching and coaching at the school, but he did so within the broader community of Saint John as well. He lived an exemplary life and everyone with whom he came in contact was a better person as a result of his advice, his selfless volunteer work in the city, his fighting for and appreciation of freedom, his fine example. We at Simonds and in Saint John are grateful for his service. Thank you to his family for sharing him. RIP Mr. Pottle.

We did not unfortunately get to meet your father but we we heard over and over again tonight “never was there a man who more faithfully lived his values.” He taught by example. At any age, when faced with an ethical dilemma, after reflection, study, or even rationalization, you as sons and a daughter would go to the simple question. What would Dad do? His character is the foundation of your conscience. His teachings were endless. He was strong in body, in spirit, and in commitment. Your father never let another man down. He fulfilled every obligation he ever undertook. His word was his bond, and everyone knew it. It was said that one never heard him utter a lie, nor intentionally deceive. Your father was self-made and self-reliant. From his education to his career, from his skill my Dad engaged with the world as a man who would be its master. Your father was proud to be a soldier, father, husband, grandfather, brother, teacher, gardener and mentor to many. Your father never made an enemy. Not one. Your father was loyal. His faithfulness to the important people in his life could be seen in the way he steadfastly maintained ties with his childhood friends. Your father was responsible to the very end. My father loved a good joke, Your father I am sure he loved your mother and all of you with every bone in his body, his visible affection overcoming his usual reserve. He had a quiet dignity, respecting himself the way he respected others. Farewell, Mr. Pottle You did good. You did real good.

I was a student of Mr. Pottle in his blue print reading class. I will always remember the time I had jelled up spiky hair, Mr. Pottle came over and placed his hand on my head, then jumped about 2 feet in the air. We all laughed as he asked "what did you do to your hair?" My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Art Pottle

We were so honored to have Mr. Pottle as our first ever Honorary Chair for our East Coast Games (2015). Art was an outstanding contributor to our sports community both on and off the court and the athletic field. We all have been very fortunate to have a person of such outstanding dedication and commitment to his community and Country as Art was. He made it a better and safer place for us all. Our thoughts are with Art’s family,as they celebrate his outstanding life and legacy. Keith Raynes Co-Chair East Coast Games

Mr. Pottle will be buried the same day as his comrade in the FSSF, Vernon J. Doucette. Mr. Doucette died last January in Ottawa while visiting his daughter. After the 10:30 am funeral mass on July 19, 2019 his ashes will be buried next to his wife, Marian, in Saint Michael's parish cemetery, Wedgeport NS. Both Mr. Doucette and Mr. Pottle attended an FSSF event in Saint John in April 2018 before the FSSF August reunion in Moncton. Mr. Doucette was in top spirits in Saint John. However, sadly, because of ill health in the following weeks he did not attend the reunion. Mr. Doucette was a remarquable man. And so was Mr. Pottle as I read about him. As the Wedgeport Legion PR man I offer my deepest sympathies to the Pottle family. This Friday will be a very sad day. But we will reflect how richer our lives are now that we have known men like these two heroes.

My sencere condolences to the Pottle family. Mr Pottle was one of our great teachers at Simonds Regional High and was respected by all. None of us back in the 50s knew anything about his heroic acts during WW II. I found out much later and am amazed by his part in the Devil's Brigade outstanding wartime accomplishments. Art Pottle is a true hero and will remain in my mind and heart forever. Rest in piece Mr. Pottle. (Warrior and Teacher)

On behalf of the Simonds Regional High School class of 1958 we offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Mr. Pottle's family and those close to him over the years. Art Pottle was an individual we all looked up to during our time at Simonds High and as others have stated, we were unaware of his heroic and important part while in service with the US/ Canada "Devil's Brigade". We, the class of '58, remember Art as a very positive influence in school and as a true hero. Rest in piece Mr. Pottle.

On behalf of Simonds Regional Class of '61, please accept our sincere condolences. We had many years in high school with Arthur as phys ed director, and he proved to be most popular and a mentor to many. Recently, we had the pleasure of Connie and his attendance at some of our Reunions over the years, and then Art and George were with us in 2011 for our 50th gathering. As in high school, Art proved to be a drawing card, especially for the fellows who had been involved with sports programs. We were unaware of Arthur's heroic war service until recent years, and we salute his courage and contribution toward our freedom today. Rest in Peace, sir. rt

My deepest condolences to the family, Art was a Prince of a Man, whom I enjoyed talking with often during many Veteran activities. A few years ago, I had the honour of driving him to and from a dinner that the Red Cross put on over at the Trade and Convention Centre. Art was not overly enthusiastic with all the attention he was receiving, stating I just did my part like the others’. During my Military service, I have had the opportunity to interact with hundreds of WWll Veteran’s and I have always been astonished at how positive, humble and eager they were to give of themselves for the greater good! May you take comfort knowing we share in your loss and strength from our prayers. Sincerely, CPO (ret) Paul D Smith

Had the pleasure of sitting on the Boys & Girls Club Board with Art for many years, and being his neighbor on the Cattail Lane for many more. It was probably back in the early 1990's when I upset the sail boat in front of Art and Connie's cottage, and within minutes, he had his aluminum boat in the water and rescued me, laughing. He never ceased to amaze us with his stories, insight, and friendship. Our thoughts are with the family. Carolyn & Robert Lockhart

To all of Art's family - my deepest condolences. He is in many ways responsible for my education and love of history. He wrote my first letter of recommendation in 1974 for an educational bursary. I received the bursary and still have his letter. Then I met him when I began my Partridge Island research. He kept me on the edge of my seat with his stories. I can only imagine the stories all of you have. Thank you for having such a great dad.

Elizabeth and I were saddened to learn of Art’s passing and extend our heartfelt sympathies and condolences for your loss. I first got to know Art through the Fortnightly Club and will never forget his interesting essays, particularly the one about left-handedness. He claimed to be ambidextrous. When Elizabeth and I were married he presented us with a beautiful pin-wheel crystal bowl, as when the Club met at his home he and Connie noticed I enjoyed her English trifle and lemon angel food cake. In 2011 he gladly accepted my request to be the Reviewing Officer for the annual Saint John Remembrance Day Service at Harbour Station. That was a proud and special day for both he and I. We’ve always treasured his friendship and youthful curiosity. He was one who was always committed to life-long learning. He will be sadly missed by the entire community. We hope that your family will be bolstered by the outpouring of love and support. Our caring thoughts and prayers are with you as you reflect on his incredible life and many contributions. Most sincerely, Bernie & Elizabeth
