Obituary of Frances MacAfee
MacAfee, Frances (Gillies), of Saint John N.B., passed away peacefully in Halifax, N.S. on April 19, 2019, surrounded by her family. She was born on February 13, 1928 in St. Stephen, N.B., but spent the majority of her childhood in St. Andrews, along with siblings Norman, Frank, Roberta and Irene (all deceased). She met her first husband, John “Jock” Gillies (deceased) while he was stationed at Pennfield, N.B. during WWII. She is survived by their two daughters, Cindy (Len Pottie) and Nenie (Kirk Ross) of Halifax; grandchildren Robin Strug (Jeffrey), Jennifer Sabol, and Saul Offman (Kimberley); great-grandchildren Benjamin and Lilly Strug, Haley and Ryan Sabol, and Eli and Naomi Offman. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, John Porter, her sister-in-laws; Elva Janes and Violet McLaughlin, and many nieces and nephews. Frances’ life-long devotion to the church led to her meeting her second husband, Malcolm “Mac” MacAfee (deceased) of Lorneville, N.B. She is also survived by Mac’s daughters Marlene and Gayle, and his grandchildren Josh, Ben, and Caroline. Frances’ greatest joys in life were her family and deep faith in God. She was very active in her church, Main St. Baptist (RiverCross), was involved with various missions, and loved her volunteer work which included visiting the elderly and sick. She worked at the art of Invisible Re-Weaving for over 50 years, a craft passed down from the hands of her beloved mother, Lucy Greenlaw. She most recently enjoyed spending time with her friends at Parkland in Halifax, where she resided for the last 1 ½ years. Frances will always be remembered for her stylish, friendly and outgoing manner, her compassion and kindness, and her delicious cookies, pies and cakes. She was an inspiration and role model to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and will be very missed. Visitation will take place at Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John, NB E2M 2L3 506-634-1701 on Monday, April 22, 2019, 11:00 am - 12:00 Noon. This will be followed by a funeral service in Castle “Fallsview” Chapel and reception in the “Fallsview” reception centre. Interment will take place at a later date in Lorneville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Rivercross Church or the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation. Online condolences can be made at www.castlefh.com
