Obituary of Agnes Ann Marquis
It is with great sadness but an appreciation for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, Agnes Ann Theresa Marquis (Hunt) on March 8, 2025.
Born in Saint John on March 20, 1930, to the late Philip and Mary (Keleher) Hunt, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Henry Marquis Q.C. (2001), two brothers (David and Philip) and two sisters (Marjorie and Patricia).
She is survived by her son, Dr. Greg Marquis (Donna Porter); her four daughters; Joanne (Andre Charron), Jane (Steve Craig), Janice and Jennifer (Steve Fogarty); as well as eight grandchildren; Dr. Michael Craig, Patrick Craig (Enelix ), Stephanie Linares (Keith), Simone Charron, Ben Charron ( Victoria), Joe Marquis, Jack Fogarty, Erin Fogarty, several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She also is survived by her life-long friend and pen pal, Clare Kelly of Dublin Ireland.
As a young girl, Agnes excelled in music. She played the organ at Assumption Church and the piano for Irish immigrants who were welcomed to the Hunt home. Music remained an important part of her life; she loved to sing and passed on her love of Irish music to her own family. In 2020, she was chosen Honorary Chairperson for the Irish Canadian Cultural Association-Saint John. She trained as a legal secretary and worked for the Veterans Land Act and various law firms, including that of her husband, Henry Marquis.
With Henry, she was fortunate to visit her father’s family home in Kilmovee, County Mayo, Ireland and the ancestral village of the Marquis family, in Lacaune, France.
She will be remembered for her easy-going personality and her beautiful smile. She was devoted to her family but also took a great interest in the lives of her extended family and many friends. She was the mother who would pack up the station wagon with her four daughters and their friends for a day at the beach. Agnes and Henry welcomed many friends and family to their home for meals, for overnight stays and for good company.
The family would like to extend thank you to the staff of the Loch Lomond Villa who provided care and comfort for our mother. A special thank you to nurse Paula Debly, a long-time family friend.
Arrangements are under the care of Castle Fallsview Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John, NB E2M 2L3, 506-634-1701. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, March 12 at 2:00 PM at Holy Spirit Parish (St. Rose of Lima worship site). A reception will follow at Castle Fallsview Funeral Home. Interment will be held in Spring at Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Loch Lomond Villa Foundation, or Romero House.
